I’m not going to lie to you, New York had never really appealed to me before. I’m not a big city person, and NYC seemed to intensify everything that a popular, bustling city is made up of. However, when planning another way to celebrate my 21st birthday (I had about six celebrations in total!), I decided that a week-long trip to the Big Apple would be a pretty cool thing to do. And so, on one cool autumn morning, one of my best friends and I set off for one long-distance flight to a country we had only spent brief amounts of time in before. And let me tell you – I loved it.

Whilst talking to friends and family about some of the best things to do in the city, one key activity that they all seemed to avoid taking part in was flying in a helicopter. Whilst I liked the idea of visiting Madison Ave and Broadway and all of the other tourist hotspots, I knew that the one thing that would really make my trip to NYC complete would be by doing something that I’d never done before – and that, quite frankly, scared the living daylights out of me. For someone who hates flying, it wouldn’t have made any sense whatsoever to go on a helicopter ride – and yet, that’s the exact reason why I wanted to do it. I told my travel partner of my plans, sent her links, and bam, it was settled. We’d be seeing New York from the sky (the best way to see it!) – and it was incredible.

A breeze shook my hair from the open window as we flew over the city, which was swathed in bright sun and was absolutely beautiful. Flying with FlyNYON, with a pilot that both put us at ease and made us laugh out loud, it was a really incredible experience. I think that helicopters are officially my new favourite mode of transport.

From canoeing in the Hudson River, to going on endless food tours, to watching Mean Girls on Broadway, to visiting a rooftop bar and watching the sun set – everything we did in the city was incredible. We stayed at a gorgeous little Airbnb where we became good friends with the hosts and their array of pets, and it truly felt as though we’d walked into a concrete jungle wonderland.

New York quickly became one of my favourite cities in North America – and I even have plans to return next year!

Have you guys ever been to New York, or plan on visiting? Let me know in the comments below!

Before I left for Portugal, I spent literal hours scouring the web for recommendations of the best bookstores in Portugal – to no avail. For some reason, this very important topic has never been tackled before, which is vastly inconvenient for bibliophiles such as yours truly. This became my motivation for the deeply daunting task of visiting every single livraria in the capital, and recording the best for you guys. Before you say anything – you’re welcome. There’s no need to thank me*.

Eduardo martinho livros

I’m jumping straight into this post with my absolute favourite place in the whole of Lisbon – Eduardo Martinho Livros. My travel companion and I were on our way to the local market when we stumbled across this gem – where we simply couldn’t resist perusing their outside stalls full of old novels and vintage postcards. After discovering several handwritten letters between lovers from many wars ago in one of the baskets, we wandered into the main shop – which unexpectedly led to us spending hours inside the shop, sharing stories and music suggestions. Eduardo, the owner, offered us a couple shots of the classic sugary Portuguese liquor Ginja, and we spent the sunny afternoon just hanging out in the cosy little store. Kicking back with some Sinatra humming in the background and with gorgeous old novels surrounding us, it’s the sort of place you can’t help but fall in love with – and it definitely became a highlight of the whole trip. Why not pop by and say hi?

Livraria Simão

As one of the smallest bookstores in the world, it came as a massive surprise to find out that Livraria Simão stores around 4,000 books. The space was originally occupied by a tobacco shop, but Carneiro, the owner, turned this space into a curious little bookstore. Despite its size, it’s the sort of place you could loiter for a good while, pondering through antique volumes of Saramago, Camões, Queirós, and, of course, Pessoa. Featuring both popular titles and more obscure volumes, the majority of the editions for sale are second-hand, meaning that it doesn’t cost much to simultaneously blag yourself a gorgeous book and also support a (both physically and literally) small business. Another great thing about this place? The owner is tucked away about 14 inches into the store, so if you have any questions then you’re never too far from the answer.

Círculo dos letras

One of the least known places in Lisbon, Círculo dos Letras is a stunning little place in the heart of the city. The store is filled with an extensive collection of literature, with every title being super quirky and interesting – and decently priced. The walls are adorned with pretty artwork, and it’s very cute and well-organised, with seats dotted across the store to sit down and read. The books themselves are entirely random volumes, with novels such as The Art of Bonsai being sat next to a Guide to Jiuzhaigou, tucked beside a book by Ant Middleton. The livraria is such a well-kept secret that it doesn’t even have a website – but follow the Rua Voz do Operário 62 and it’ll draw you right to it!

móveis convento

Whilst located just out of the capital in an absolutely gorgeous town called Mafra, Móveis Convento is a place you absolutely cannot miss visiting. Filled with the most gorgeous antiques (I’m talking intricately painted chests from the Mogul period, and hand-painted golden bowls from underground cities), everything looks like it should be worth millions but instead is on sale for a mere couple of euros. The absolute best part of this place is the little corner where there’s hundreds of old books stacked precariously upon one other, as despite the fact that it’s not a place that specialises in being a livraria, they still possess hoards of gorgeous novels. They sell just about anything to fill your quirky kitsch needs, and along with vintage Portuguese volumes, you can also pick up an Egyptian-style Tiffany or a painting from 1600’s Japan. I can promise that you’ll fall in love instantly.

Bertrand livraria chiado

Any self-respecting bibliophile absolutely has to find themselves at this livraria – simply because of the fact that it’s the longest running bookstore in the world. The Bertrand Livraria in Chiado is in the Guinness Book of World Records for being just that, and purchasing a book here will earn you an official stamp. Made up of several wide-arched concaves joining each section, the inside of the store is super pretty, and the outside is covered in the most beautiful tiles in the city (and we all know how the alfacinhas feel about their azulejos!). After perusing the titles, you can walk down to the end of the bookshop and chill at their cafe – where you’re sure to find the best hot coco in Portugal.

Menina e moca

The first place I visited after stepping foot on Portuguese soil was the gorgeous Menina e Moca, a lovely little bar-cum-bookstore-cum-hangout. I fell in love with everything about the place immediately, from the little indoor leather seats where you are entirely surrounded by literature, to the outside space where you can bask in the sun with a mojito as you look up to read the poetry floating on a wire above your head. The absolute best part about the place, however, is the vast selection of poetry on offer, meaning that you can really lose yourself in the true essence of Lisbon. Apparently they also host epic-sounding events here – so why not visit and tell me all about them?

If you’re looking for someplace adorable where you can peruse old leather-bound books with gorgeous spines, baskets full of vintage maps, and wooden hand-carved figurines placed in front of museum-worthy paintings, you’ve certainly come to the right place. Everything about this livraria just screams “organised mess,” and in doing so, immediately welcomes you into cosy, home-like surroundings. Beside gorgeous collectable books, you’ll also find old-fashioned globes and glass cases filled with antique collectors’ novels from the 18th century. For such a stunning place filled with so much poetry and wonderful Portuguese literature, it’s no wonder that it’s located just up the road from the famous Pessoa statue – so why not take a photo with him and one of his novels you’ve purchased from this bookstore?

Ler devegar

Officially the largest bookstore I have ever visited, Ler Devegar is one of the coolest places in the world ever. It’s the sort of place you could spend literal years in, devouring novel after novel without any chance of tiring of them. The building itself is super pretty, located right in the heart of the LX Factory – the hippest, loudest, and best part of the city. The walls are covered in art pieces, and there’s a bar space where you can sit down and have a few drinks whilst taking it all in. There’s a wide variety of languages available, with Portuguese unsurprisingly dominating, but with many other popular languages in stock. Intertwined with the old printing press, the whole place is swathed in history and beauty, and it’s one place you simply cannot miss out on visiting in Lisbon.

Under the cover

Officially the most effortlessly cool livraria in the whole of Lisbon – it houses the sort of chic aesthetic that my 15 year old self spent a ridiculously amount of time trying to attain. From the second you walk in you are immediately surrounded by glossy copies of journals about tea and almanacs about travel and volumes about art. Located right next to the Gulbenkian Foundation – my favourite museum in the city – it really exudes the essence of this cultural hub. Outside, there’s a cool mirror where you get to witness how happy you look outside the store, and inside is a full-length mirror where you can glance over at yourself holding one of their books and see just how good it looks on you. Their magazines cover pretty much every topic imaginable – from food, travel, art, fashion, and photography, to architecture, culture and music – and everything in between. They offer some absolutely stunning international magazines, and also sell their own merch – the perfect way to show off the fact that you’re both a alfacinha and a massive high-standard bibliophile, probably with a fancy coffee table full of similar indie volumes.

And so, that summarises the absolute best bookstores in the whole of Lisbon – the sort of places your bucket list looks empty without. Have you guys ever visited any of these stores, or plan on doing so? Be sure to let me know in the comments below!

*Although you can thank me, if you really want to. Maybe in the form of book recommendations?

With over 18.3m tourists flocking to Amsterdam each year, there is no point in labelling it as an off-the-beaten-track hidden gem. Yet, there is still an uncommercial charm to the capital, where secret spots entice you with delicious food, welcoming locals, and endless crevices to explore. Amsterdam needs to be on everyone’s bucket list – and here’s why.

THE HISTORY

Inching up the stairs of the metro station felt like this gradual lift to this entire new world, enshrouded in antiquity and buildings illustrating the hushed stories of its past. Considering I had rocked up to Amsterdam with limited expectations, the last thing I was envisioning was this history-riddled vibrant wen of a city. From antediluvian structures to some of the best museums on the continent, the city sure has some tales to tell.

LOCALS ARE THE NICEST IN THE WORLD EVER

I know I’ve said it before in regards to the Welsh, but the locals here are literally the nicest, friendliest people I’ve met. From van drivers pausing mid-drive to offer directions with Dutch tongue and hand gestures, to the little old lady shop keeper that enthusiastically gave us advice on the attitudes of the people behind the Red Light District – I’ve never been met with such ferocious care. The weather can get almost unbearably cold, but at least the atmosphere is warm. Everyone is super smiley – although, that may have something to do with the weird tasting cake.

EVERYTHING MOVES IN SLOW MOTION

Amsterdam is the epitome of slow travel, where you really get the opportunity to take in every inch of life before moving on, squeezing out every drop. The fastest things about the city are the bikes, which snap your senses out of a content lull of lust for the quaint and nordic-esque surroundings, with a sudden urge to fling yourself out of the way. It shocks you to realise how fast and stressful life back in cities such as London and Paris are, and leaves you feeling like you’ve had some sort of slow-travel epiphany. It’s great.

FLAWLESS ARCHITECTURE

The buildings lining the streets are some of the most architecturally perfect I have ever seen, with everything looking faultless without pretension. From the passé facades of old houses to the famed bridges and windmills, Amsterdam is the perfect place for someone that appreciates good design. It’s insanely refreshing to be surrounded by so many bewitching edifices.

GORGEOUS WINDING CANALS

Imagine small Venetian canals framed by thin leaning gingerbread-iced buildings, with yellow bikes and red shutters and blue plant pots. It is breathtakingly beautiful to glance out as you stroll amongst the canals – although as a heads up, the wind whips over the water and makes the side streets very cold very quickly during winter months. I hear their famed cookies are very effective at helping avoid the disconnecting cold.

EASY TO GET LOST AMONGST ART

As the prior home to the much-adored art legend Van Gogh, it’s no wonder that people are drawn to the city for its mass of artwork. The galleries work at charming you, and the Van Gogh museum brings a touch of sophistication to the whole experience with tapas and glasses of champagne offered on certain days.

EATING OUT IS AN EXPERIENCE

It borders on exhausting, the sheer amount of love and effort that is put in to their food establishments. For our first morning we decided on visiting this little recommended cafe downtown, where the journey consisted of weaving through shop hideaways parallel to the hidden backstreets of the city. When we arrived, hungry and eager to sightsee, we found ourselves entwined in this stage curtain entrance of a deeply design-conscious food house, where the chill vibe and accompanying music we’d been subject to all evening continued to intrigue. The waiter was overtly welcoming, and pointed to the art-plastered walls and bookshelves. It was wonderful and gorgeous and exhausting – and mirrored our experience in every other restaurant in town.

BEWARE: AMSTERDAM HAS CLAWS

As a side note, I think it’s worth mentioning that whilst you absolutely have to add Amsterdam to your bucket list, be aware that it does have claws. The moment that we found ourselves walking towards the departure gate veeery slooowly as our plane was on the verge of taking off was when we realised we had already adopted the laid-back nature of the locals. My own aversion towards landing back in the UK was so strong, I knew the Netherlands had left its mark on me and would never let go. It’s a dangerous thing when you’re stuck in a foreign country, no money and no cell battery, and you risk losing your plane. That’s when you know they’ve got you.

And so, that concludes why you need to include Amsterdam on your bucket list. Unlike other major cities, the pull of this place comes with an urgency that is hard to bore of. Between the sightseeing, amazing people and even more amazing food in such a slow-paced atmosphere, I think I’ve started to learn to take life a little more slow and purposeful. Amsterdam leaves you feeling like you’ve both learnt and lost something, and that’s a feeling we all need to experience.

So I recently spent the best part of five days at Reading Festival, which to those of you who don’t know is this massive music festival in Berkshire. It’s like this younger, more reckless version of the famed Glastonbury, but full of chavs drinking Redbull and downing Ket, featuring vastly overweight girls trying to fold themselves into sequin pants. It’s the sort of place you’d be lucky to come out of without scurvy, trenchfoot, or hepatitis. Most people there end up crying in the foetus position in their tents at some point (be it because of the cesspits of human waste regarded as the toilets, or the horse tranquilisers everyone’s bent on trying), but alas, instead I’ve brought you a guide on how to not let it get that bad.

DON’T DWELL ON THE FACT THAT YOU JUST SPENT 80 HOURS OF WAGES IN ONE GO

And you have nothing to show for it. Honestly, you’ll feel a lot better if you ignore that niggling feeling that you could have seen 16 Broadway shows, bought a decent car off Ebay, or taken your best friend on a two week trip around Poland, because if you think about how one beer there is worth five back home, you’ll end up being completely miserable.

MAKE SURE YOU’RE A MILLION PERCENT COMFORTABLE WITH THE PEOPLE YOU GO WITH

I’m pretty lucky that I’m relatively close with the main person I went with, as that meant we could complain about just how goddam much we needed to crap the whole time. Seriously, after the first day it’s all anyone cares about, and if you’re with someone who you feel awkward with then it’s just going to make it super difficult. Either way, if you’re not particularly close before you go, you’ll know everything about their bowel by the end of it.

DRIVE, DON’T TAKE THE COACH

Oh. My. God. Taking the coach to Reading was the worst idea ever. Not only do you face two-hour long waiting times, but you also have to put up with the aggressive vomiting from people high off their faces on Ketamine on the way back. When you’ve had about three hours’ good sleep over the period of five days, the last thing you want is to wake up on a sweaty coach journey having to lift all your bags from the pools of sick swirling around your ankles.

WEAR LOTS OF SUNCREAM

Sure, I’ve sunburnt my armpits, thighs and hands (out of all places), but for the most part I don’t think I’ve had to suffer too much. Spending 12+ hours outside in the sun is likely going to mess with you unless you’re slathered in factor 50, but at the same time it is pretty entertaining to watch a bunch of people walk around with bright red skin, with white lines where their friends sunscreen-ed a massive willy on their back.

UNDERSTAND THAT FOUR-MAN TENTS ARE NOT FOR FOUR MEN

So one night we have this other person stay with my friend and I in this four man tent, which was at that time filled with our bags, worldly possessions, and selves – and let me tell you how insanely uncomfortable it was. This person slept in the middle, which meant that us either side of her would wake up with wet hair from the inside of the tent, breathing weirdly from the lack of air, on the corners of our mats, with no room to move an inch. It was the worst thing ever, let me tell you. I think that if you plan on getting a four man tent, it’s only big enough for two people. A six man tent is for three, and sixteen is for eight. Unless you want to wake up wanting to punch someone, always go for the bigger tent. And if you already have a perfectly good tent, stay in your goddam lane. Leave our tent alone and wait for the MD to leave your system far, far away from me and my comfy-ass self-inflating mattress.

WEAR SUNGLASSES

This isn’t a PSA, I don’t care about whether or not you burn your eyeballs. I’m just saying that there’s a scary amount of white people everywhere, and the sun glare on their skin will probably hurt your eyes more than the sun itself.

DON’T LEAVE ANYTHING YOU WANT OUTSIDE

My friend got her chair stolen because she left it out the third night. I don’t know why someone bothered stealing it as I’m pretty sure we found it in the human waste cesspit the next morning, but apparently it happens, and you will just hate on sitting on a ground full of condoms and Xanax. Don’t even leave your shoes outside, as if they’re worth more than £5 they will either get stolen or covered in someone’s wee.

WEAR GOOD SHOES

Imagine – there were people with strangulation bruises around their necks, lumps in their arms from dodgy needles, broken noses, and black legs from mosh pits. So my badly injured dear friend and I went to the medical tent and waited half an hour for her to be seen. When the medic worriedly asks my friend what is wrong with her, she pauses and then goes, “see, I just have the worst blisters from my shoes”. If you don’t want to get turned away from a medical tent with some £5 plasters and a laugh, take some good shoes.

NOTE THE MOSH PITS

Mosh pits differ from genre to genre, but the overall idea is that a circle is formed in the middle of a big group of people, and then everyone goes crazy pushing each other, punching each other, and generally trying to rid of insane amounts of testosterone. I was in one and it was pretty fun, but then I didn’t get socked in the face so I can’t really comment. Just know that there’ll be mosh pits at every single gig at a music festival, and they’re more likely to happen when you’re at the front. Also, don’t look to the musicians to help you as they’ll either encourage you or join in.

SCOUT THE LOCAL AREA BEFORE ARRIVING

So when we turned up at Reading, I was carrying the weight of four small children on my back in the form of knock off alcohol, soya milk, and candy. I literally thought I was going to die carrying that rucksack for hours, and when I found out there was a Lidl just a £4 Uber ride away, I was tampin’. Unless you’re willing to spend eight quid on a beer or nine pound on some dodgy looking burger, buying stuff outside the camp is a must, but carrying it is hell.

MAKE FRIENDS

So we had some great Essex neighbours called Emma and George who were sweethearts and great to talk to, and a bunch of teenage dudes who were gorgeous and great to look at. Not only were these people great, but they were super helpful, helping us set up our tent, blow up chairs, etc. I made friends with this one dude who was great as he bought me a £9 hamburger in exchange for looking after his ex-girlfriend who was high out of her mind on MD. I’m not quite sure what happened to that girl, but the burger was good.

USE THE ARENA TOILETS, NOT THE ONES AT CAMP

I know everyone goes on about festival toilets and how grim they can be, but I never knew just how bad they really are. Imagine little metal boxes in 77-degree heat where people can see your calves and the top of your head, with the doors not locking and slamming every five seconds. Now imagine the actual bog, which is made up of a cesspit of human waste a few feet below the hole you’re expected to squat over, where everything from vomit to caca goes down. Risk looking down and you’ll see the crap from the person next to you landing on these piles of waste, with the worst smell you could ever imagine. There’s no sinks, no toilet paper, no seat, no air to breathe without wanting to sick up your overpriced festival meals. It’s literally the most disgusting thing you could think of – and I have Crohn’s Disease, so that’s really saying something. And then there’s the toilets we discovered in the Arena, which are proper flushing toilets with air fresheners and soap, that even have good wifi. It’s crazy, and most people don’t even realise this luxury being so close to them – the first morning we went and paid a pound at Toby Carvery so that we could use a toilet that didn’t have a bunch of human fluids dripping off it.

CARRY FLAGS

Are you Welsh? Are you super proud of your heritage? Then it’s likely a bunch of people from your country will be carrying flags around them, and you’ll be gutted if you’re not there to represent also. I literally saw like 20 flags from Wales (one from Cardiff, boo), and I genuinely felt so hyped whenever I saw one of my people. If you’re insanely patriotic like me and want to make a bunch of friends from your hometown then you’ve just got to carry a flag with you or pin it to your tent.

BRING AN EMERGENCY KIT

Band-Aids, Fybogel, sterile bandages, power banks. If you or your phone is dying then you’ll want some way to handily fix it – and the medical tent won’t lift a finger if your problem isn’t life-threatening.

USE THEIR WATER STATIONS

If only someone had told me I didn’t need to take eleven bottles of water with me, then maybe my back wouldn’t still be aching from carrying them cross-country. All you need is one empty water bottle, and then bam, you can refill it whenever you choose. Queues are crazy in the morning though, so definitely fill up on water at night.

Coming home after five days at a music festival is honestly the best feeling in the world. You can sleep in a bed! You can eat good food! You can have green tea! You can crap in a normal toilet! You can shower! With the latter, the water will turn brown and be filled with a mixture of other people’s fluids, crumbs from pills you’ve sat on, and lumps of dirt, but man will it feel great. To be frank with you, the £200 festival entry fee is nothing – by the end of it I’d consider paying that for a working shower.

And so, that’s my advice on how to survive a music festival. I hope it helps y’all if you ever want to waste nearly £500 or more in one go, but if not then it’s your own fault really. Just know it’s unlikely you’ll see me at one again without booking myself into a hotel for the evenings, with a proper meal plan and running water. Oh, and one last thing for when you’re there – try to not get hit by the cups of flying piss that are flung around the festival the whole time. I can guarantee you they will hit you at least twice.

Unlike most people I didn’t start trapeze lessons because I wanted to overcome a fear of flying, heights, or jumping off of things with only my hands stopping me from plummeting to the ground. I didn’t do it because I’d recently gone through a bad break-up and wanted to rediscover myself, nor because of a crumbling mortgage, mid-life crisis, or horrendous divorce like a bunch of other people that take it up. No, my reason for starting trapeze lessons was much more reasonable and practical than that. I started trapeze lessons so that I’d have a solid back-up plan if I failed my exams – join the circus.

“Oh, you’ll enjoy it once you’re up there! You’ll toootally regret it now if you have to climb back down the unstable 30-foot ladder.” I was standing at the top of a tiny meter-square platform, where a small American girl was holding onto my harness to stop me from flinging myself off by accident, and another one of the instructors were climbing up to shout at me to make me move.

I would have been quite happy sat on the ground for the few hours of class, just watching other people as they hesitantly jumped off, a look on their face like they were going to crap their pants. It was quite amusing watching the rest of the people in my class have their turns – a young Polish woman who shouted that her knees were shaking before she fell off, a girl who started yell-crying when her friend turned out to be better than her, a retired yet gorgeously muscular circus act show off to his equally muscular wife who’d had so many dermal fillers that I couldn’t tell if she was terrified or non-plussed, and a girl my age who had had four lessons prior and still couldn’t make a catch (pfft, what a loser, right?).

From the ground, it looked almost fun, as if it weren’t so high or so fast or completely at loss of control. But when one girl started crying uncontrollably after letting go tumbling messily down, I rethought the waiver they made me sign (which ensured that if I died a horrible Final Destination -esque death my family couldn’t sue), and I’m pretty sure that was when I started questioning my own sanity.

See, I’ve always thought that I have balls of steel. I’ve always been the sort of person to casually emit phrases like “oh, I want to do a skydive for Crohn’s Disease“, or “wouldn’t it be fun to bungee jump over a few hundred foot drop down by Oregon?” However, now, I was stood at the top of a little platform, having to lean over a 30-foot drop, with only my skinny white arms holding onto a bar stopping me from plummeting.

Eventually, I was tired of the instructor yelling at me, and did not fancy walking back down the ladder, so I had to reach over to grab the bar, and then I jumped.

I know, I know, I’ve never had better photos taken than these

And oh my god. If you’ve ever watched that scene in Sex and the City where Carrie tries out trapeze you may think that it’s this exciting, freeing feeling, flying through the air. But in all honesty, it’s the stuff of nightmares (actual, genuine, recurring nightmares). Turns out, I’m not a fan of holding onto this flimsy little bit of plastic going at a terrifying speed where I can’t do anything to stop it. Completely crazy, I know.

The first swing is the hardest, where you’re just hanging like a limp doll as the park flies past you, but then it gets easier. Eventually, it slowed down and I managed to pull myself up and over the bar, reaching out backwards to be caught, ending in a neat little backwards flip. The woman yelled instructions at me, as she was basically like “there is no way you’re getting off this goddam thing until you act like a seasoned professional”, and voila, I did it. Like, five times. My eyes were closed to stop myself from vomming at the height of it, but hey. If anything, the worst part was trying to get down because the Polish woman kept trying to add me on Instagram.

Would I do it again? Maybe, so that I could just show off to friends or get some badass photos for my Insta. Either way, whoever says it’s “freeing” or “fun” or “carefree” is a damn liar, and should not be trusted.

A year ago marked my fifth year living in London, and it was killing me. The mundanity of life in the city with its endless stream of grey people with grey lives always rushing to be somewhere, was really getting to me. Considering I’m from Wales (think beaches, cute lil communities, mountain views, lots and lots of cake), the big sights of London really started to grate after a while. And so, I decided to set out to explore the more hidden parts of the city, that would be devoid of both tourists and mundane businessmen with little black briefcases. This is when I found the Buddhapadipa temple.

I’ve never been a particularly religious person, but have always been interested in it. I’ve spent time in synagogues, Hindu temples, churches, and even mosques, but none of them posed religions that I was ready to devote my life to. However, when I was craving something new a year ago, I found out that there was actually a Buddhist temple maybe an hour away from where I lived. I thought the religion was interesting, the culture was interesting, and thus, I soon visited Buddhapadipa with a friend, and completely fell in love with it. I’ve gone every couple weeks since. And so, this is why I think everyone should experience life at a Buddhist temple at least once.

In busy everyday life, it’s rare that we ever have a chance to truly think about things in our lives, as most of the time we keep ourselves occupied. And so, having the chance to really be mindful in such a serene environment has got to be healthy, as we all need time to process emotions and thoughts, but don’t have enough time to do so. With things like meditation, you’re able to sit with a monk or two and several other Buddhists and try to reach a state of mental clarity, which involves acknowledging thoughts, letting them pass, and move on. For example, I recently went through a pretty damn horrendous breakup, and by meditating in this incredible little temple, I was able to acknowledge the pain as it came, and try to heal from that. It’s not a cure, but it’s the first step to being able to process thoughts and ideas in a healthy manner.

TO UNDERSTAND AND APPRECIATE A NEW RELIGION AND CULTURE

I think that it’s so important to learn about the lives of those around us, and so this is probably the most crucial thing I think you can get out of visiting a Buddhist temple. It’s a great experience to be able to peek into an entirely new religion and the cultures that are so often associated with it, be it to take something away from that experience or to just have the option to educate yourself on a topic you may otherwise not have the chance to. You’re able to ask the monks questions about the religion and learn directly from the people who are most involved with it – one example is when I sat down with one and we had a great discussion about why monks wear orange robes (a very important question to me a year ago).

A SENSE OF COMMUNITY

In big cities, it’s hard to find a small community that you get to share experiences with regularly, and so whenever I get the chance to go to my local temple, it’s a great feeling to be able to sit at the table in the monks’ house and chat with everyone. I know that organised religion tends to bring people together, but with Buddhism its all a little less concrete, and so you can relate with everyone, whilst having the religion still lack a sense of utilitarianism. I went only a couple days ago with another friend, and she was so impressed with how everyone knew each other and was so interested to hear in the updates of each others lives – in a lot of places, you won’t get that. It also offers a sense of structure and organisation, and when people go through hectic lives with things happening all over the place, this could turn out to be quite a reassuring thing.

THEY’RE INSANELY BEAUTIFUL

Whilst a lot of other religious buildings can also be stunning (namely the impressive marble crafted ceilings of many Hindu temples), I find that every Buddhist temple I’ve been to has been literally insane. Think hand painted murals inside, very Thai-esque exteriors, and gorgeous gardens, they have all been stunning. Especially as for me, finding something so completely immersive in beauty such as this, especially just off of a bustling main city, was a crazy concept. It’s great to be able to wander through the grounds with the ponds and little bamboo filters and tiny Buddha figures, and then go inside this massive temple with brightly coloured paintings depicting different Pāli scenes.

A CHANCE TO UNWIND

Like I say, my favourite temple is just out of the centre of London, and so you go from this crazy busy city life to a very calm, peaceful atmosphere. After work or other daily stresses, I think it’s important to have a chance to calm down and re-centre yourself before you continue, and so Buddhist temples are perfect for this. My favourite thing is being able to sit in the gardens in the sun as incense is burnt and teas are handed out, and then going inside the temple in order to meditate with the monks.

EVERYONE IS AMAZING

This is a pretty broad statement, but from my personal experience, every single person I have met at a Buddhist temple has been so lovely, and so genuinely interested in the lives of others. Everyone is happy to be able to spend time with each other, and it’s such a beautiful thing to experience. It’s so easy to turn up to my local temple and immediately feel at home, regardless of whether it’s your first time or you five-hundredth time. I’ve never met more welcoming people.

FREE FOOD

I’m sure there was a much better way of wording this point, but it’s a massive plus of Buddhist temples – they have an abundance of free food and drinks. Because Buddhism is a religion where everyone tries to give as much as they can, it becomes evident in the places that people will congregate. And so, every time I turn up at my local temple I’m able to sit with everyone and drink some green tea (or coffee, or hot coco), and eat some of the wonderful food that is prepared. Of course, it’s always a good idea to give something back to the monks that run the establishment, but for the most part, they won’t expect anything in return. Again, that is such a contrast from London life, to be able to walk into a place and be handed many free things, and that generosity is a major thing that I adore about Buddhist temples.

MANY FESTIVALS

This draws into the whole sense of a community idea, but within Buddhism there are a lot of celebrations, which means that everyone can go to the temple and celebrate festivals and other festivities together. I have been to several of these, and whilst I’m one of the only white people (most people are Thai and come with a group of family), everyone is so accommodating that I feel as if I’d been raised with the same people in the same culture. There’s singing and food and so much conversation that it’s really hard not to fall in love with the place. I’ve even been featured on some weird Thai TV show because of a film crew that turned up to one of the events. It’s honestly super great.

The first time I went to my local temple, I was amazed by how generous and lovely the people were, and how breathtaking the temple was. For someone who always craves adventure, this has also turned out to be a sure way to temporarily cure fernweh, and it stops me hating the fact I’m not our exploring another country when I’m unable to. With Buddhism, it’s all about finding the middle of two opposites, such as good and bad, confidence and uncertainty, with the ultimate goal being happiness. When you’re completely happy and content you won’t desire anything extra. As one of my Buddhist teachers said, we should “all focus on the present, as you’re never in the past nor future. Love, forgive, be mindful”. Whilst I don’t think I’ll ever find myself fully converted by a religion, I can’t think of any better place to be given such advice.

The canals weave through the brightly coloured cottages, and every now and then you will stumble upon a small shop brimming with intricately woven lace – what the villagers pride themselves on the most. The traditions of Burano are still very prominent, and the fact it holds the most talented lace makers in the world is just a small part of the culture of the island. Despite the gossiping widowers sitting in the sunshine on their patios embroidering lace like it’s childplay, it’s the buildings that tend to captivate visitors.

Burano is a fairytale village, lit up with an equal amount of colour and enchantment. The cottages are painted such wonderful colours due to the fact that when this village was completely off the tourist map, it’s main income and way of life would be run by the fishermen. At night, they would return home after a long day out on a boat (often in sweltering conditions), exhausted, and be unable to identify which house was theirs. This eventually led to the villagers working together to paint their homes insane colours so that they could tell which was theirs, resulting in the beautiful postcard view either side of the canal.

The small bell tower, the Campanile, is visible from almost every angle of the island, reinforcing the traditional Catholic ideas that Italy has been so historically part of. What most written media on this place doesn’t tell you, however, is that is also leans pretty dramatically to one side, depending on where you view it from. This makes it not only the #1 place to visit due to the colourful cottages, but also pretty up there with the Tower of Pisa. The best views are from the bridges on the East of the island.

If it’s easy to get lost in the city in Venice and all it’s rich history, Burano is a vibrantly painted maze. It’s always worth it to get completely lost in a new place you visit, but when you’re here, each turn makes you feel as if you’ve become a part of the stonework. It’s a place untouched by time, and it felt woefully unnatural to bring out a camera whenever I felt the need to photograph anything. Plant pots and laundry hang from balconies with pastel coloured windowsills, whilst small boats dock from the other side of the houses. Every now and then, a rogue swan will flitter past – which offered a stark contrast to the backgrounds where I see them in London.

Burano is easily accessible via boat (say, 40 minutes from the main city of Venice), and if you visit, why not try other nearby islands such as Murano, Torcello, and Lido? Whilst none of them quite beat Burano, they’re still well worth the visit. On the ride to and from these islands, you will also glimpse the Cemitero San Michele, the floating cemetery where Venice lay their dead. It’s quite a wild concept to imagine having to travel a few miles via boat to see late family members. A full day boat pass is 20€, resulting in limitless travel around these islands – and an opportunity to tick some beautiful places off your bucket list.
