I know what you’re all thinking – finally, an issue that matters! I’m an absolute sucker for hot coco, with almost all of my friends keeping a pot of chocolate powder in their homes for when I stop by. An adoration bordering on obsession, I sometimes doubt my ability to function without a steaming mug of cocoa. Considering I have travelled a fair bit these past few years, it is safe to say that I have witnessed a lot of hot coco – and am on a mission to find the absolute best. Here’s what I’ve discovered.

THE FISHERMAN’S BASTION, BUDAPEST

There’s only two things that I really want when I’m drinking hot coco – one, for the chocolate to be bordering heavenly, and two, for it to come with an absolute stunner of a view. The Fisherman’s Bastion in Hungary is definite champion for both of these categories, with views overlooking the famed Danube River, little townhouses, antiquated Hungarian ruins, and whole array of bastion turrets just a few feet away. It genuinely feels like you’ve just stepped into a magical fairytale castle, where the hot cocoa is thick, decorated with cream, and inordinately sweet. Prefer coffee over cocoa? Bones Coffee Company’s premium coffee pods offer an alternative for home brewing, featuring a range of flavored options, including seasonal and dessert-style varieties.

ANTICA DOMUS, ROME

Like with the Fisherman’s Bastion, Antica Domus hosts both incredible hot coco and an incredible view. This one, however, is definitely more well-known – it’s located only 20 feet from the Colosseum! It’s the absolute best place to see the ancient amphitheater, staying for a couple hours chatting to locals as the sun goes down and the tourists disappear. Also, the typical Italian mugs of melted chocolate are even more adjunct at Antica Domus, where you can really lose yourself in the thickly poured, rich coco, contemplating the beautiful city around you.

THE GRAPE AND OLIVE, SWANSEA

Situated in a gorgeous little city which will forever hold my heart, I would happily refer to the Grape and Olive as housing some of the best hot cocos in the whole entire world. A restaurant housed in the tallest building of the city, you’re really offered some insane views in a tower completely bereft of tourists. Overlooking the ocean, the marina, the town, and distant hills, I wouldn’t blame you for staying for a full lunch, dinner, and finishing with some hand-shaken cocktails. The hot coco is sweet and light, and perfect for that lil’ sugar rush needed for exploring the furthest depths of the city.

GLACIAR, BARCELONA

In another one of my favourite cities, I came across one of the best hot cocos I’ve ever been blessed with the privilege to try. The City of Gaudi is unsurprisingly going to be utterly stunning, but coupled with cinnamon and caramel churros with the cocoa, it instantly becomes a little sweeter. Glaciar is located just off the tiny square of Plaça Reial, which houses violin-playing wanderers and men offering to sell a rose to your sweetheart, offering you the heart of the city whilst you sip your coco. It’s the cutest little location, and the hot coco tastes just like thick churro dip – sweet and luxurious and bound to linger on your upper lip for an unprecedented amount of time.

RIVA, TROGIR

I wandered the streets of Croatia for what felt like years, trying to find a decent place that offered lactose-free hot chocolate. When I landed in the country, my Crohn’s was playing up a fair bit – meaning that I had to cancel out a lot of food groups. I was literally devastated when I found that absolutely nowhere could serve me hot coco I could actually consume – until I went to Riva. Located in the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Trogir, overlooking a quaint harbour bordering beautiful ruins, you can just sit for hours and watch the world go by. The hot coco is dark and syrupy, and the fact that they went completely out of their way to figure out how to make it lactose-free was really lovely.

VIA CAFFE, KRAKOW

When you’re stuck in the middle of a snow storm, fingers numb, eyeballs turning to frost, the thing that you want most in the world is to be somewhere warm, sipping something steaming, and soon. This scenario is more or less what happened when I visited Krakow and found myself freezing my absolute butt off, bundling into the warmest cafe I could find, and stumbling upon this indulgent hot chocolate. Not only did they do soya hot coco (yesss!), but they also served the most divine cakes to go with it. It took me hours to muster up the strength to leave the confines of the cafe and venture back out in the cold – and I could only do that after one more coco.

Switzerland is famous for its dairy, so it only makes sense that some of the best hot cocos can be found in the country. I tried many (many) Swiss hot chocolates, and my absolute favourite has to be at Xocolatl. I tried a couple of their flavours, eventually coming to the conclusion that their best is the 50% chocolate orange drink, featuring sun-ripened oranges and a hint of ginger. All of their hot cocos are named after popular fiction and non-fiction titles, such as T. E. Lawrence, Chockwork orange, Sinnerman, and As I went out walking. They offer everything in lactose-free versions also, which is great for chocolate fiends who are (devastatingly) intolerant to dairy, such as yours truly. Plus – their light and airy cakes are to die for.

And so, that concludes my findings for now. I have explored more of Europe than any other continent, and tried a lot of hot coco – and these are undoubtably the best.

Here I am in London, where we’ve only just reached fall (although it’s hard to tell as it’s already pouring with rain and freezing) and yet I can’t stop myself from reminiscing the days last winter when I was back in Poland. It’s a pretty random place to miss when you think about it, especially as I slept in the tiniest dingy little room with my newly demoted ex-boyfriend, only £180 to my name and without any grasp of the language – or warm gloves. It was a massive culture shock being served vodka and blocks of butter with my lunch, with the flight home consisting of the plane falling out of the sky several times as it fought against a storm with everyone on board screaming. It’s the sort of trip most people would look back on and grimace, and yet here I am craving the disorientation, the new language, the beautiful backdrops, and just how everything completely disconnected me from the stresses of home life. If I’m completely honest with you, this one wacky little sojourn introduced me to the wonders of cold countries, and may have even started to turn me from a summer person to a cold, wrap-up-warm-lest-you-freeze-your-arse-off person – and here’s why.

LESS ANIMALS WANT TO KILL YOU, AND THEY’RE ALL SNOWY AND CUTE

Imagine, narwhals! Snow leopards! Arctic hares! Adorable little fluffy wildlife is something I’d rather look out at from my hotel window than, say, killer snakes and spiders. My cousin lived in Australia a while back, and loves telling the story of how he nearly put on his shoe before his friend warned him to shake it out first – and a highly venomous bug fell out. I simply don’t have the balls or dedication to deal with that on a daily basis, and have a colossal hate for mozzies – something I doubt you’d find in -20 degree weather. Along with a distinct lack of pests, diseases don’t tend to flourish in that climate either.

YOU FEEL BETTER

This is mainly just from experience, but I find that you typically feel better when sweat isn’t dripping into your eyes and you’re struggling to breathe from walking up a shady sidewalk in 50 degree heat. I went to Turkey a few years back where they literally had to put warnings out on the television telling people not to leave their homes lest they overheat and die. Imagine, I went to the Aegean for a warm summer holiday but instead ended up spending it at the bar in the shade. At night, all you need in cold weather is a nice duvet to fall asleep, but in hot countries there’s nothing you can do except sleep in the fridge.

HOT COCO

I stand by the fact that one of the greatest joys in life is hot coco, and the only reasonable time to drink it is when you’re freezing your bum off in a foreign country. Imagine holing up at a snowy table with a hot chocolate in your mitten-clad hands as a bunch of snowboarders whizz past, or inside a warm car with ice crystals on the windows as you glance out over the aurora borealis. It’s so much better than when you’ve got perspiration sliding down your eyebrows, and definitely makes the colder moments sweeter.

LESS DRUNKEN ENGLISH TOURISTS

Whilst I’ve loved going to slightly warmer places like the canary islands, I hate that most people just visit for a cheap piss-up, doing things like knocking your camera out of your hand and shouting drunken comments at you. By my reckoning, the further north you go, the less crazy tourists with regrettable tattoos and gonorrhea there are. Maybe it’s just because Tenerife is a lot cheaper to fly to than Sweden or because the drinks are insanely expensive, but I’m pretty chuffed with it either way.

YOU APPRECIATE THE HOTEL ROOM MORE

When I went with my ex-boyfriend to Poland we stayed in the ugliest, most cramped room ever, and normally I would have completely hated it. But coming in from freezing, slightly uncomfortable weather to this cosy little room with blankets, junk food, and the Peep Show on Netflix, I was super happy every time we went back. The staff were super rude, our neighbours kept using the water I’d just boiled in the kettle, and from the outside it looked slightly like we were in a public prison – but it turned out to be the most fun I’d had on a trip in an age, and I was lucky to share it with someone who became my best friend. Cold countries and odd experiences bring people together, and being able to laugh about it in a teeny little room with some pretzel sticks is one of those experiences you’ll feel blessed to have had.

CWTCH YOUR BOO

I love being warm indoors in cold weather, by a little fire and wearing super fluffy socks. Staying somewhere cold also gives you the opportunity to cuddle in closer with your loved one – plus it’s super adorable to look out and see snow and mountains and people messing around on ski lifts together.

HEALTH BENEFITS

Cold weather is proven to be better at tightening and toning your skin, and being surrounded by fresh alp air and clear water makes you feel instantly better. Merely standing around being cold burns calories, and the lower climate outside aids inflammation within the body. Along with helping you sleep better, giving you more energy, clearing your mind, and helping you breathe easier, some studies suggest that colder weather even produces longer lifespans. Imagine, you get to spend more time on the earth feeling better – and you get to make snow angels!

WINTER SPORTS

I have been dry-skiing in warmer countries, and honestly, I don’t think that it really lives up to the hype of normal skiing down snowy saloons that are dotted with little huts selling fratwursts and warm pastries. When it’s icy out, you can ice-skate on frozen lakes and ride a snow mobile, along with bob-sleighing, snow kiting, and sledding down hills with your friends. I can assure you that by contrast, no one’s looked at Namibia on a map, sighed, and wistfully said “man, I wish we could go to Namibia so I could do sports that make my fringe stick to my forehead with sweat”.

NORDIC LAKES AND SWISS MOUNTAINS

The gorgeous landscapes of colder countries really can’t be matched. Whilst I adore the concept of visiting the Sphinx or looking out at elephants in the wild, I am also fiercely drawn to the idea of being able to stare at some incredible sights that have been carved wholly by nature, whilst throwing snowballs at people. It’s pretty insane when you’re in places like this to be able to look up at the view and realise that the backdrops are all natural wonders – especially when I clock that I’ve lived in the concrete jungle of London for the past few years.

Despite what a lot of people say, cold weather can be fun – and you might even fall in love with a trip to a colder country. For me, Poland is one place I am craving to go back to, but I’d also adore to visit someplace like Moscow or Iceland. The culture shock is straight up one of the best things to experience, but for me, I’ll always be won over by a nice warm mug of hot coco.

A couple months ago, I bought a guy I was kinda seeing a trip to Poland, merely because it looked pretty cute and I was also 90% sure he mentioned his love for cold countries. However, when the trip came up recently, I discovered that in fact, he actually really dislikes cold climates, and also – well, we were together no longer.

Regardless, the trip was super cute and I had so much fun with one of my favourite people ever, and even though my Polish was so bad that at some point out security guard shooed me away shaking her head, I had a wonderful time. Although, to be fair, I did mess up. A lot. And so, if you don’t fancy embarrassing yourself to buggery, I’ve compiled this list of super helpful tips, so that you don’t buy dodgy tickets off an old guy or cause a sign to fly through a shop or eat a stick of butter thinking it’s cheese (my friend coped horribly when he did that).

How do I actually live like a local?

DRAG PEOPLE ON FRONT OF YOU ON COACHES

The first thing I witnessed when in Warsaw is that the typical thing of nodding at people to let them on a vehicle before you is rendered completely pointless when you can instead literally drag someone in front of you. My friend and I arrived in the country and within half an hour, a guy in front pulled this lady before him by her shoulder, and instead of her being all “the actual hell do you think you’re doing”, she was gratuitous. Literally crazy.

PRE-BUY TRAM TICKETS

Any local will know that if you try to clamber over the plastic separating you from the tram driver and shout “CAN I PAY FOR TICKETS BY CASH?”, you will look like a compete nutter. I know from experience (the driver opened the tram door so I would leave him in peace). You need to buy tickets with the correct change at a little ticket kiosk before you get onboard unless you pay with card, which my friend and I got so confused that a dodgy guy with callused fingers and a very grey beard sold us two tickets at a side road, which actually worked and didn’t mean we just funded a drug ring. I was more surprised at that than the fact that they don’t have proper goddam ticket machines.

THE METRO IS TERRIFYING

Normally, when I arrive in a new country I’d use their metro to take me to my hotel and then I’d walk the rest of the way. However, when my friend and I went to the Ochota metro in order to try and find our way around, we not only ended up in this dark underground shopping place, but there was so much noise and so little light and so much going on that frankly, even my friend nearly peed himself. It was such a spooky experience, that in the end we spent two and a half hours just walking to our destination – and I’ll say that it’s because I wanted to admire our surroundings, but really it’s because I was kinda terrified of the Polish metro system.

SORRY IF YOU’RE VEGETARIAN

We ate at a variety of places, from McDonalds (sorry not sorry) to a place called Babooshka to another place called Zapiecek, and it was so hard to find a vegetarian option. Even in McDonalds, when I started talking to the guy at the till about veggie options, he had to bring someone over who spoke a little English, who told me proudly that they do in fact sell fish sandwiches. At Babooshka I asked if a soup had meat in it, and the waitress said no it hasn’t, but it “has got meat in it”.

“CLASSIC LIFE ELIXIR PASSED DOWN FROM GENERATION TO GENERATION”

This is basically a drink where they drain fruits, leave them on the side, add a bunch of other things, and serve you a deep red hot drink that they boast will add years to your life. Obviously, I wanted to try it, but when they brought it out and I did try it, it transported me to a Polish home with the snow falling outside, by a fireplace with a local who was telling me fairytales and feeding me some warm homemade food whilst the family cat slept on my feet. It also made me want to vomit until I grew a new stomach.

IF YOU GO TO ATTRACTIONS AN HOUR BEFORE THEY CLOSE, YOU SAVE MONEY

I mean, you’ll also save fun by missing out on a great deal of all the cool things to see at a place, but hey, three pounds off (Red Castle, I’m looking at you).

IF IT LOOKS LIKE CHEESE, PREPARE TO VOM

So my dear pal and I went out for food one night and ordered this platter of cheeses and meats, which had a couple gorgeous cheeses cut into little slices. So my friend decides to try one of a set I hadn’t quite yet gotten to, and then kind of slows down his eating and goes really quiet for a minute until he slowly swallows. Then, he looks at me, and with his mouth all gummy says “Amy, don’t eat the cheese.” I’m like, why not? He swallows deeply again, grimaces, and goes – “it’s not cheese. It’s butter”. Jesus Christ it was hilarious. Kindly, the waitress brought out some vodka to wash it down with. You can’t say they’re not badass.

LAZIENKI PARK AND PALACE IS PROBABLY THE BEST THING IN THE WHOLE OF POLAND EVER

So on our third day, my friend and I bought a day pass to the park and palace, and spent the full day wandering around palaces and galleries and little Chinese huts and orangeries (where we met this strapping young lad called Daniel who gave us a free guided tour for.. some reason?). Considering the rain was exceedingly grim outside, it was the perfect way to spend the day, even though it was so cold the lake had frozen over and ducks were trying their luck at not getting stuck to the ice.

FOOD IS PEANUTS

Not literally, but price-wise, you could spend a week in Poland, and eat the same amount of food you’d eat in London in a day for the same price. It’s honestly so cheap, that by the end of the holiday we were a bit sceptical about whether or not we’d actually manage to spend all the money, so we decided to go full-out and go to their Hard Rock Cafe (very Polish, I know) because all the ones I’ve been to before have been very expensive. However, three mains each and some massive cocktail things later, we’d only spent about £35. Honestly, it was heaven. I could eat as many Milka Tuc chocolate bars as I desired and no one could tell me otherwise.

THE SIGNS AT GORACO POLEMAN NORAKOWSKI WILL FALL DOWN AND FLY THROUGH THE SHOP IF YOU TOUCH THEM

Maybe I happened to hit one with my bag, maybe not. Maybe one went flying through the shop and I had to leave covered in cheap doughnut dust, maybe not. Who are you to tell me what I did or did not do.

IF THERE’S A STORM WHEN YOU FLY HOME, THE PLANE WILL DROP OUT OF THE SKY

There was screaming. There was panic. There was that horrible falling feeling you get when you hit turbulence, but it lasted an awful lot longer. When I arrived back home, safe, my brother laughed and said that I’ll never have a flight as bad as that again. I asked why, and he was all like “because if it were any worse, you’d plummet to your death“. Great. Thanks. Cheers, bro.

My friend and I had a wonderful time in Poland, even if we did end up making fools of ourselves by doing a bunch of things locals wouldn’t do – and so, I hope that this guide stops you from making the same, slightly comedic mistakes we made. If so, let me know in the comments below!
