A Traveler’s Guide to Living the Miami Dream on a Budget

Believe it or not, Miami can cater to a wide range of budgets. You don’t have to spend like a millionaire to live the Miami dream. With a bit of creative thinking, you can stay, eat, and enjoy Miami’s many attractions without breaking the bank.

You can approach budget travel in two different ways. Either save and stick to a set budget, or supplement your spending with employment as you travel. The beauty of a busy city like this one is that you can find over 50 part-time bartender jobs in Miami, so earning extra spending money shouldn’t be a problem.

Additionally, we’ll take a look at how to cut back the costs of accommodation and where to eat for cheap. Let’s explore all the ways you can make the most of Miami while on a budget.

Where to Stay Without Splurging

Accommodation will eat up a hefty portion of your budget if you are not careful. Hotels are typically on the pricier side of the accommodation scale, but if you’ve got your heart set on a hotel suite, shop around. Use price comparison sites to get the best deal on hotel stays possible.

Alternatively, check out homestays and short-term apartment rentals that can be more affordable and spacious than hotels. You could also arrange for an apartment swap with a local in Miami. Many websites allow you to open up your home to travelers, and they’ll return the favor. This means that you are essentially spending zero of your budget on accommodation.

Eat for Cheap

Avoid tourist traps like the plague. These eateries are not particularly worth eating at, but their location makes them a convenient spot for hungry travelers. Instead, take advantage of Miami’s unique blend of cuisines and eat where the locals do. For example, Cuban restaurants can provide you with a great value and flavorful meal.

If you don’t mind eating al fresco, check out the many street vendors and food trucks dotted around Miami. Here you’ll find easy-to-eat street foods such as Cuban sandwiches, tacos, and empanadas. Or pack up a picnic and take your treats to the beach for a budget-friendly feast with a view.

Low-cost Daytime Activities

Often, it’s the activities you take part in during your travels that drain your budget. However, Miami offers numerous free or budget-friendly activities to keep you occupied throughout the day.

For culture vultures, Miami has a great contemporary art scene. What’s more, it is free to visit the city’s galleries on the second Saturday of every month. So, make sure you add this date to your travel itinerary. For street art, stroll along the Wynwood Walls and check out the Wynwood Art District.

To get around and explore Miami on the cheap, rent a Citi Bike. It’ll allow you to fit more activities into your day and zip around must-see areas such as Little Havana and South Beach.

Evening Entertainment on a Budget

It’s not all flash casinos and big-budget entertainment. There are affordable after-dinner options to keep the night going without running out of funds.

Checking out live music from cover bands and independent artists is a great way to spend an evening in Miami. Not only are tickets cheap or free, but you’ll also get to broaden your musical tastes. Ball & Chain is a well-known live music venue to add to your list, and for authentic Cuban vibes, head to Sala’o Cuban Restaurant & Bar.

If dancing is more your thing, then Miami is the place to show off your moves. Not so confident but still want to join in the fun? Search for beginner’s dance classes in the area. You might even get the first class for free. Head to the main street, Calle Ocho, in Little Havana, where you’ll be sure to find a bar that offers salsa nights.

Other Ways to Save While Traveling in Miami on a Budget

Renting a car in Miami is an expensive move. Not only will it take a chunk out of your budget, but parking in Miami is a nightmare and costly, too. Instead, take advantage of free transportation such as the Metromover or low-cost public services like the Metrobus or Metrorail.

Not everything in Miami has to have a price tag. Don’t forget you can enjoy the beautiful scenery for free. Go to South Pointe Park or South Beach just before dusk hits to marvel at Miami’s stunning sunsets.

Whether you decide to get a job on the side or to rely on your savings, Miami is a totally affordable place to visit on a budget. Furthermore, strictly managing your spending in this city doesn’t mean you have to forgo the fun. With a little planning and by following this guide, you can live the Miami dream without overspending.
