Tasting Palermo: A Feast Through Buenos Aires’ Coolest Neighbourhood

If there’s one thing Buenos Aires does exceptionally well, it’s food. So when I heard about Sherpa Food Tours, a local company offering small-group culinary tours through Palermo, I immediately signed up.

I wasn’t sure what to expect—Palermo is massive and packed with places to eat—but the experience turned out to be such a warm, generous, and beautifully curated deep-dive into Argentine food culture that I walked away feeling like I’d just had dinner with old friends.

A Warm Welcome and Thoughtful Accommodations <3

From the moment we met our guide, I felt like I was in good hands. He had the kind of energy that made the whole group instantly relax—warm, super knowledgeable without being overbearing, and genuinely excited about what he was sharing with us. There’s something about being around people who are passionate about food and history that makes everything taste better, and this guy really knew his stuff.

Even better? They were incredibly flexible and kind about my dietary restrictions (I can’t eat lactose, onions, or tomatoes—bit of a food tour challenge, I know). But Sherpa handled it all seamlessly, and not once did I feel like I was missing out. Every dish was thoughtfully adjusted so I could enjoy the experience fully, and not in a way that made me feel like a burden. It was clear that they’d put real care into it, which is so rare and deeply appreciated.

Food Without Spoilers (Mostly)

I don’t want to give too much away, because a big part of the fun was not knowing what was coming next. But I will say this: the tour featured a beautifully paced lineup of stops, each one more delicious than the last. There were flaky, golden empanadas, melt-in-your-mouth meats (I’m still dreaming about them), luscious Argentine wine, and the most divine ice cream (dairy-free for me, of course!) to cap it all off.

The tour included several different tasting stops, each with a different vibe, which kept the evening exciting and dynamic. And these weren’t your run-of-the-mill touristy joints—these were places locals actually go when they want a nice evening out, and I felt lucky to be inside each one. Some were modern and trendy, others more classic and soulful. There was an intentionality behind each choice that made the night feel like a story unfolding course by course.

Cultural Insights and In-Depth Connections

Beyond the delectable dishes, our guide enriched the experience with stories about Palermo’s history, architecture, and art. We learned about the evolution of the neighbourhood, its cultural significance, and the tales behind its colourful murals. These narratives provided a deeper understanding of the city’s soul and the people who shape it.

The small group size fostered a sense of camaraderie among us, and sharing this journey with fellow travellers from around the world led to engaging conversations and newfound friendships (seriously, I now follow them on Instagram). By the end of the tour, we were exchanging quips and travel stories, united by our shared love for food and culture.

A Few Final Thoughts (and a Big Recommendation)

The premium Palermo tour includes multiple courses across several restaurants, over ten tastings, and a curated introduction to Argentine cuisine at its most refined, real, and delicious. They accommodate dietary needs with care, keep the groups intimate and friendly, and build the whole experience with a lot of heart.

If you’re in Buenos Aires and want a night that’s a little luxe, a little local, and absolutely full of flavour, I can’t recommend Sherpa enough. Come hungry, bring curiosity, and prepare to leave full—in more ways than one <3
