What to Pack for a Long Weekend Beach Getaway

When you prepare for a long weekend at the beach, it’s a good idea to decide what deserves space in your bag and what you can leave at home. A short trip still involves a range of different situations. For example, you may swim, relax on the sand, walk along the shoreline, or spend an evening near the water – all of which require different clothing and gear. But what should you definitely bring with you, and what can you leave behind? Here’s a practical guide to what you should consider when you pack for a short beach break.

Lounge essentials

When you spend time on the beach, you will likely want clothing that keeps you comfortable while you sit, walk along the shoreline, or relax on a towel. As such, you should pack swimwear that fits well and feels comfortable enough for extended wear. Many travelers choose swimwear by SKIMS because you can find cuts and styles designed for a wide range of body shapes that look good while still feeling comfortable.

You should also pack a large beach towel so you can dry off after swimming or stretch out on the sand. A cover-up or a lightweight sundress helps when you walk between the beach and nearby cafés or shops, and comfortable sandals help you move easily across sand and pavement without your feet getting sweaty and uncomfortable.

If you plan to stay near the beach during the evening, pack casual clothing for relaxing at your accommodation. A pair of beach shorts and a light t-shirt will easily handle most casual situations. Comfortable sleepwear will also make your stay much more relaxing after a long day outdoors.

Protective gear

When you spend long hours near the ocean, it’s vital to protect your skin and eyes. Sun exposure is often harsher near the sea, as the sun reflects back at you from the surface of the water. Eye damage and long-term skin damage can be the result if you don’t protect yourself well – especially if you have fair skin. So, pack sunglasses with UV protection and a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF rating of at least 30 and apply it regularly during the day.

You should also carry lip balm that contains sun protection. Many travelers forget about lip protection, but lips are surprisingly sensitive to UV rays and can burn in a very short time. Similarly, a wide-brimmed hat can shield your face and neck while you walk along the beach.

If you travel to a coastal area where insects appear in the evening, you should also pack insect repellent. That small item can make outdoor dinners or sunset walks far more comfortable.

Travel-friendly gadgets

It’s unlikely that you won’t, but still – if you can, bring a smartphone on your beach trip, as you can use it for navigation, photos, and communication. You might also pack a waterproof camera if you plan to swim or snorkel and still want to capture photos underwater.

Entertainment options like e-readers and headphones for listening to music will help you to relax at the beach. Remember to pack charging cables and a compact power bank as well to keep your devices running during long days at the beach.

Toiletries

It’s often a good idea to pack travel-size toiletries, so you don’t use up too much space and your bag stays easy to carry. A toothbrush, toothpaste, deodorant, and basic hair care products will cover your daily routine during the trip.

You should also pack skincare items that you use regularly. Face wash, moisturizer, and facial mist can help you refresh your skin after hours in the sun and salt air. A small first aid kit can also help if you get minor cuts or blisters during outdoor activities. Include bandages, pain relief medication, and any prescription medication you take.

Must-have accessories

Bring a waterproof pouch if you plan to spend a lot of time in or near the sea or the pool, so you can protect your phone, keys, and other small items from sand and water. A sturdy beach bag will also help you to carry your belongings between your accommodation and the shoreline.

When you pack for a short beach trip, you’ll benefit from choosing items that serve more than one purpose and fit easily into a single bag. If you review your weekend plans before packing, you can select clothing, gear, and personal items that match the activities you expect to do. That preparation will keep your luggage manageable and help you avoid last-minute scrambling for something you forgot.
