Italy is just one of those places that needs to be on every person’s travel list. With some of the most incredible culture and history in the world, mouthwatering food and sun drenched scenery just waiting to be discovered, it’s clear to see why. One of the best things about Italy is that everywhere is so different.
You can enjoy the bustling city of Rome, head to Naples where you can climb Vesuvius and immerse yourself in the history, or go to Lake Como for some of the most beautiful views you’ll ever see. One place in particular you don’t want to miss when heading to Italy, is Tuscany. Situated in central Italy, with Florence as the capital, it has a diverse landscape including mountains, beaches and busy towns. In this article we look at what you can do when in Tuscany.
Go on a wine tour
One thing you need to do is a wine tour in Tuscany. Home to some of the most notable wine regions in the world, Tuscany is known for producing mainly red wine, with the most prominent grape being Sangiovese. When having a wine tour in Tuscany you can enjoy an immersive experience into the region’s history, learning more about how the wine is made and why it tastes the way it does. It’s a great way to spend an afternoon sipping on fine wine, eating some of the local food and taking in the views.
See the historical monuments
Tuscany is a place with a deep rooted history and as such, there are many sights for you to see and explore. Head to the famous Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore, the Leaning Tower of Pisa or the bridge Ponte Vecchio. You can see Michelangelo’s famous ‘David’ statue, some of the works from Botticelli as well as the Duomo Basilica. It’s a good idea to check ahead of time which places you need tickets for and the dates and times each place is open. This can avoid any disappointment on the day!
Enjoy the food
While you might just think of Italy and think ‘pasta’ one of Tuscany’s most famous dishes is the Bistecca alla Fiorentina – a T-bone steak with simple seasoning but packed with flavour. They’re also known for Cantuccini with almonds as well as pasta dishes including pappardelle al cinghiale. Take the time to explore and wander the cobbled streets seeing which local places you can find. Often the most incredible food comes from the little side street local eateries where you can really get a taste of rustic Italy.
These are just a few things you can do in Tuscany to really make the most of your time there. We recommend getting around by foot as it’s very walkable, but there is good public transport available, plenty of taxis and you can of course rent a car.
