Wandering through the labyrinths of Diocletian’s Palace is like traveling back in time, where antique columns coexist with cozy cafes. But after a couple of days in a crowd of tourists armed with smartphones and selfie sticks, I wanted something real. I wanted to hear the sound of the surf, not the hum of dozens of tour guides, and try local food where the Croatians themselves dine, and not where the tourist set lunches are served.
The solution was obvious: to see the real Croatia, you need to get off the beaten path. And for this, you need a car. I booked my car through Discover Carsand set off to explore the Dalmatian Coast at my own pace.
Why I Decided to Rent a Car and How to Choose the Right Service
I will not lie to you – finding a good rental company in a county you don’t know much about is a very difficult task. Among my demands for the company was confidence in their competence, full transparency when it comes to financials, and a wide selection of cars. I chose a platform that offers global reach – access to over 50000 locations in 164 countries, thanks to partnerships with thousands of well-known suppliers.
I prefer to organize everything from my smartphone while on the road.
I won’t lie, at some point, I was surprised to discover how many rewards Discover Cars have received for their service, including a gold at the 2025 Magellan Awards in the «Travel Services Marketing – Website» category and the 2025 World Travel Tech Awards, as they were nominated for the best car booking and best website.
The filters on their website work flawlessly: just a couple of clicks, and I found the perfect compact crossover, easy to park on narrow mountain roads. And best of all, all rental terms and prices were displayed up front. No hidden fees or unpleasant surprises popping up at the rental desk. The app stores all the information you need, from complete rental details to direct access to the rental manager. Everything in one place.
Practical Tips – How to Avoid Stress When Renting
Before we hit the coast, I’d like to share a couple of important insights that will save you stress and money:
● Arrival Rule. This is the most common mistake newbies make. Never specify a pickup time exactly the same as your arrival time. Flights can be delayed, and lines at passport control are unpredictable. Allow at least an hour and a half extra to avoid losing your reservation.
● Credit Card. Remember that most rentals in Europe require a physical credit card (credit, not debit) in the name of the lead driver to hold the deposit.
● Full Coverage. The roads in Croatia are excellent, but narrow streets in old stone towns and occasional small rocks on mountain passes are common. I highly recommend choosing the Full Coverage option. This will guarantee your peace of mind for the entire vacation.
● Flexible Plans. Traveling independently means being flexible. Plans can change at any moment. That’s why I love that you can change or cancel your booking free of charge up to 48 hours before the rental starts.
In case you have any questions during the trip, there is no reason to wonder what to do, as the company has a customer support service that is available all day and all night long in 35 languages. While I didn’t use it during my personal trip, the 4.6 rating on Trustpilot says it all – 263K reviews with the majority of them being 5 stars. This means you will not be disappointed with the comfort of use when you work with this service.
Itinerary – Away From The Tourist Cliches
Having escaped the bustle of Split, I headed south along the famous Adriatic Highway (Jadranska Magistrala). To my left were the steep cliffs of the Biokovo mountain range, to my right the endless blue of the Adriatic.
My first stop was Vruja beach. It is almost impossible to get there by public transport, so even in peak season, it is sparsely populated. It is a wild, rocky shore with crystal-clear water, where underground freshwater springs flow directly into the sea, creating a stunning temperature contrast. It’s the perfect place to cool off after a long flight.
A Culinary Discovery In The Mountains
After swimming, I headed inland, away from the coastal highways, toward the Cetina River Canyon near Omiš. My destination was a traditional Croatian «konoba» – a family-run tavern that does not feature in glossy guidebooks.
I turned onto a winding country road and found a place tucked away among olive groves. The owner didn’t speak English, but we understood each other perfectly. The octopus with new potatoes baked under a «peka» (a heavy cast-iron bell covered with coals) was simply divine. The meat melted in your mouth, infused with the aromas of rosemary and local olive oil. Without my own car, I doubt I would have ever found myself at that wooden table overlooking the mountains.
Late in the evening, I reached Biokovo Nature Park. Climbing up the narrow paved road in a rental car is a driving experience in itself, requiring concentration. But the views from the glass-bottomed Skywalk observation deck are breathtaking. From here, at an altitude of over 1200 meters, the islands of Brač and Hvar seem like toy islands, scattered across the waters, golden in the setting sun.
Returning to Split late in the evening, I realized something important. Croatia from the window of a tour bus and Croatia from behind the wheel are two completely different countries. The freedom to stop at any unnamed bay, turn onto an inconspicuous dirt road to a vineyard, or simply watch the sunset on a cliff while listening to your favorite music is priceless. And a well-organized car rental makes this freedom accessible to everyone.
