Why you should explore Europe by bike

Travelling through Europe by bike gives you the chance to experience places you might otherwise pass straight by. Instead of simply travelling from one destination to the next, cycling makes the journey itself part of your holiday. You can stop in small villages, take quieter routes through the countryside and explore at your own pace. If you enjoy active holidays and want to see a different side of Europe, a cycling trip is well worth considering.

Why the pace of cycling changes everything

One of the best things about travelling by bike is that you naturally slow down. You still cover plenty of ground, but you have more time to take in your surroundings along the way. You might stop at a local market, take a break in a small village or change your route because you spot somewhere interesting. Cycling also makes the journey feel like a bigger part of the holiday. A long climb, a quiet road through the countryside or a route alongside a river can be just as memorable as the destination itself. You are not simply passing through an area, but you get to experience much more of it.

Cycling holidays in France

France is a great destination for a cycling holiday, whether you are looking for relaxed routes or something more challenging. There are cycling routes throughout the country, taking you through wine regions, along rivers and past historic towns and villages. The Loire Valley is a popular choice for a more relaxed trip, with relatively flat routes and plenty of castles, vineyards and small towns along the way. Provence offers a different experience, with hillier routes and landscapes ranging from vineyards to lavender fields. Another advantage of cycling holidays in France is that it is relatively easy to plan a multi-day trip. There are plenty of places to stay and eat along many popular routes, so you do not necessarily need to be an experienced cyclist to organise a longer journey. France also has quite a strong cycling culture, which makes it an obvious choice for anyone wanting to explore the country on two wheels.

Cycling holidays in Italy

Italy is another destination with plenty of variety for cyclists. Each region offers something different, so the type of trip you have will depend largely on where you decide to go. Tuscany is perhaps the most familiar option, with its rolling hills, vineyards and quiet country roads. In northern Italy, you can cycle around lakes and through mountain scenery, while regions such as Puglia offer flatter routes through smaller towns, farmland and coastal areas. Food is also a big part of travelling through Italy by bike. Stopping at a local café or trattoria for lunch fits naturally into a day of cycling and gives you the opportunity to try regional dishes along the way. Rather than rushing between major tourist destinations, cycling holidays Italy make it easier to spend time in smaller places you may otherwise have skipped.

A common mistake cyclists make when planning European routes

It is easy to assume that summer is the best time for a cycling holiday in Europe, but that is not always the case. In southern European countries in particular, July and August can be very hot. Popular destinations are also busier during these months, and accommodation can be more expensive or harder to find. For many European destinations, May, June and September are worth considering instead. Temperatures are often more comfortable for cycling and popular routes tend to be quieter than during the main summer holidays. The best period will of course depend on the region. Mountain routes can have very different conditions from coastal or countryside routes, for example. Checking the typical weather and seasonal conditions before choosing your dates can make a big difference to how enjoyable your trip is.
